My Personal Message

Hey Guys,

As some of you already know I am taking on a number of sporting challenges this year to raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation and to help raise awareness of the problem of heart disease in Ireland. Many people do not realise the magnitude of the problem, however, 27 people die of heart disease every single day in Ireland, thats almost 10,000 each year.

I have decided to take on these challenges on my father's 10th anniversary, he passed away unexpectedly 10 years ago this August as a result of a heart attack.

My challenge will consist of running, swimming, cycling and other sporting events and it was to begin with the Connemara half marathon in April, however, I unfortunately had to pull out of the race as I was sick. Since then I have completed the 10k Samsung Dublin City Night Run, the 5k Docklands Run, the 10k Calcutta Run, the 10k "Women's" Mini Marathon, the 8k Docklands Run, a 3k open water swim and a 20k kayak paddle.

In August on the weekend of my dad's anniversary I will be cycling 175k from Dublin to my home village Garrykennedy, Co. Tipperary, swimming 4.5k across Lough Derg from Williamstown harbour to Garrykennedy harbour and running 10k in a charity fun run around the locality.

The following weekend in September I am attemptng my first Ironman 70.3 event in Galway where I am swimming 1.9k, cycling 90k and running 21.1k; I have a sprint triathlon the following weekend (750m, 20k & 5k) and then the following weekend I'm running a half marathon (21.1k).

My challenges conclude at the end of October when I will be running in my first marathon, the Dublin City Marathon (42k).

In preparation for these events I will be running, swimming or cycling almost every day in order to prepare and build up my fitness. If anyone is interested in accompanying me during any of these training sessions or any of the events I would be glad of the company, since first putting up this page I now have 7 people on board for the cycle to Tipp which is great news and the more the merrier!

One of the main fundraising events will be the 10k Fun Run in August. The fun run will start in Garrykennedy on Sunday 26th August and it is hoped it will be a great day out with a few surprises thrown in, as well as raising additional funds for the Irish Heart Foundation and helping raise awareness of heart disease in the local community. More details can be found on our Facebook page "Garrykennedy 10k Fun Run".

How can you help?! Any donations no matter how small (even the price of your usual tipple) would be hugely appreciated and will go a long way to helping me achieve my target. Other than donations, anyone who fancies keeping me company on some of the runs/cycles/swims I have ahead of me would be more than welcome to join me and of course it would be great to see you in Garrykennedy for the fun run if you could make it, it should be a great weekend with lots of entertainment lined up throughout the weekend and a few surprises thrown in!

If anyone would like to know more about the Irish Heart Foundation or any details in relation to prevention of heart disease in Ireland I have included a link to the charity below.

You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from me thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your support,

James
Irish Heart Foundation

The Irish Heart Foundation works hard to prevent people developing cardiovascular disease and to support those affected by it. Our charity is the only national charity working to reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke. We are 91 per cent funded by public donations.

Nearly 10,000 lives are lost to this disease in Ireland every year - that's 27 people a day - and thousands more are left with disability as a result of stroke. By making a donation to our charity, you are helping to make life better for people affected by cardiovascular disease.
