Diabetes Care West has joined us at Mycharity.ie and we would like to wish them the best with their fundraising.
Here is some information on Diabetes Care West : In 2004 the team at the Endocrinology and Diabetes Centre, Galway University Hospitals established the charity "Diabetes Care West".
It was mainly set-up in order to accept the increasing amount of donations and gifts being given by patients and their families and friends. Support for the charity has grown since it began and continued support is even more important now in the current economic climate. The team are grateful for donations received regardless of their size.
We are particularly dedicated to delivering high quality structured education programmes to our patients, to executing worthwhile research and to ensuring of staff are given the appropriate training.
Living with diabetes becomes a lifelong learning process once you are diagnosed. Managing diabetes can be exceedingly demanding, often requiring lifestyle changes ? for example stopping smoking, diet and physical activity changes, taking medication, managing stress and monitoring blood sugar levels. It is imperative that people with diabetes have the right information and skills to help them manage the disease. High quality structured education programmes (SEPs) aim to empower people with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively self-manage. Obviously running such programmes is costly, especially in the current economic climate.

Camara Education, a social enterprise and charity, specialises in the re-use of computers to educate children in disadvantaged schools in sub-Saharan Africa, Jamaica and Ireland. Camara Education refurbishes computers sourced from Irish businesses, government departments and individuals, loads them educational software and distributes them to disadvantaged schools. this enables thousands of marginalised communities' an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty they find themselves in.
To date Camara has dispatched over 27,000 computers in this way, improving education for over half a million disadvantaged children and giving them the opportunity to acquire the digital literacy skills needed for the 21st century.
This year alone the charity has processed and shipped over 9,000 computers as the demand for affordable technology increases year on year. Currently Camara's partner Hub in Kenya has 200 under-resourced schools on a waiting list to receive Camara computers and training. A similar situation is seen by Camara's partner Hubs in Zambia, Ethiopia, Lesotho and Jamaica.
Due to this ever growing demand, Camara is offering a free computer reuse option for the Irish public in January. The case for reuse before eventual recycling is very compelling. With up to 200,000 computers thrown out each year in Ireland, many of these could be reused by disadvantaged communities both at home in Ireland and abroad.
With Camara, each reused computer has a positive educational impact for at least 10 disadvantaged children each year. Each computer also defers the release of 650kg of CO2 emissions.
To reuse your old computer for the purpose of education, Camara's drop-off location is in Chapelizod Industrial Estate, Dublin 20 open Monday to Friday and late Thursday evening from January 3rd.
Camara also has drop off centres in Townsend Enterprise Park, Townsend Street, Belfast and on Distillery Road, as part of the National University of Ireland in Galway. For further information, please call 01 6857121.

Straight Ahead have joined mycharity.ie this month and we wish them luck with their fundraising!
Today in Ireland, at least 50 young people and children who have severe orthopaedic conditions such as scoliosis, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and neuromuscular limb deformity are waiting for surgery. This surgery could reduce their pain and completely change their lives for the better. Every year, about ten of these cases have to wait longer than they should, and end up with needless extra damage because of the delay. Because orthopaedic conditions such as scoliosis affect young people most often during the growth spurt just before puberty, any delay in treatment has a serious, negative affect on the patient in terms of increased pain and discomfort. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
Straight Ahead's Role: At Straight Ahead we want to do something about this. We hope you can help. A fantastic team of surgeons, nurses and other medical staff at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin are waiting to complete these surgeries with many of them providing their time for free. In addition a number of Irish medical device companies have generously provided free surgical implants to ensure that these surgeries are completed for the lowest possible cost. The Straight Ahead team understands that the Minister of Health is trying to find funding to make these cases a priority, but change often takes time, particularly when public health funding is decreasing. The Minister's commitments are why Straight Ahead has set a one-year limit on its activity. The team hopes that by the end of our one-year project the Minister for Health will have set up a structure to give children and young people with orthopaedic conditions the surgery that they urgently need.
Objectives: Straight Ahead's objective is to provide free surgery for 10 Irish children in the next 12 months. Our surgical team will assess those patients whose cases are most "time critical". We cannot fix the problem of waiting lists in Ireland but we would like to do what we can to help. Through the provision of free medical care and surgical implants, Straight Ahead will reduce the costs of these cases from approximately ?500,000 to ?150,000 and that's where we need your help. By giving a donation, running an event, taking on a sponsored challenge you can help us complete 10 life changing surgeries for Irish children in the next 12 months.
