We were recently contacted by Victoria Leat, the director of Links for Change. She has established an enterprise that links volunteers with charities worldwide. I spoke to Victoria on the phone from her home in Armenia and she told me all about the new venture:
"Links for Change is an enterprise dedicated to supporting development, conservation and human and animal dignity through linking volunteers and charitable organisations around the world.
"I developed the business after returning from my own volunteering experience in Zambia. I had seen for myself the significant role a volunteer can have in developing an organisation and also met many people who were looking to or were volunteering. Both organisations and volunteers had had mixed experiences and I realised that there was a real gap between organisations that desperately needed volunteers and volunteers confused about where to look for placements.
"This is where we come in. By linking volunteers and charities and supporting both parties throughout the whole process, we feel we can help both organisations and individuals develop. We take the stress and apprehension out of the equation and help both sides understand how they can really benefit from such an experience.
I asked Victoria how she felt we could help, and she explained:
"We are in the early stages of developing the business and are looking for new partner organisations to join us. Our service is free to charities as we pass our administrative costs on to the volunteer. We want to get the word out that we are looking for charities to join us so that we can provide them with the volunteer support and skills they need.
"What we want to explain to charities out there is there is a way that can host volunteers, even if they can?t afford to pay for their accommodation or food. Obviously it can help a volunteer if some contribution can be made, but it is not a requirement. No matter what a charity?s circumstances, Links for Change can help."
I was interested to hear more about what benefit Victoria felt hosting a volunteer gave to a volunteer:
"There are so many advantages to hosting volunteers. Bringing in a new person to an organisation can bring fresh enthusiasm, new ideas and creativity. An international volunteer will also be able to help the organisations open up channels for fundraising and raise its profile. New skills and experience are also available to help train staff, implement new ideas and build a strong and sustainable future. Above all, I feel that hosting a volunteer from another country helps both sides learn about other cultures and builds understanding and tolerance in society.
"The benefits to the organisation do not simply stop at receiving a volunteer. Links for Change wants organisations to become sustainable and so provides support and advice. We have an experienced team able to assist in many different ways and we are always here to help. Although new, we hope to expand our operations in the future to include training and workshops so that we can help organisations grow even more."
