My Personal Message
*Update* 16/08/09 - First off huge thanks to everyone who's supported us thus far, you've all been very generous! We've raised around €1,350 which is fantastic but we still gona aim for €2,000!
6 days left to race day, so I wanted to give you all an update and as some of you expressed an interest in popping over, I've included some info on that below.
We signed up to this 14 weeks ago and have had varying levels of training (and motivation) - for some reason we've slacked off the last few days, but I'm gona just say thats due to the need to rest up ;) Ro's developed a lovely dicky knee and my own aren't the may west but all in all I reckon we're in better shape than we've been for a while, ready to motor up Croagh Patrick!
As we have hit our costume fundraising targets I shall be donning a Superman costume and Ronan is paying tribute to Batman, though this just in - don't try ironing transfers onto nylon - it just adds more ventilation holes where you don't want them ;) !!!
So that's it - we're both looking forward to the upcoming week of little or no training and an excuse to eat a ton of pasta!
*Update*29/06/09 - Wow, we have friends!? Thanks a million to everyone who's supported us so far - unfortunately for me (Richie) I now have to wear a Superman costume (I'm not going to lie - it will be a jogging take on the original!) and we may even get Ronan into something Batman related. We were over in the neck of the woods where the race will be held recently and saw from afar some of obstacles that lie in wait - more training methinks.......
3 hours. That's the length of time it took for Team "You Sure There's A Pub Up Here?!" to form - from TV advert, to persuading Ronan that he is better than he thinks, to nervous giggles, to regret and now firmly to panic. But we're in now, so a little matter of 14 weeks to train for surely the most arduous day we will have put our soft, nubile bodies through since Yosemite (see picture - we're the ones crawling through the sand). Of course there'll be no crawling this time....
What is Gael Force West 2009? Aside from 6-9 hours of hell, it is more commonly known as an Adventure Race where we will undertake running, kayaking, cycling, some more running, wee bit more cycling a quick jaunt up and down Croagh Patrick followed by a stumble to the finish. The race starts at a beach out by Killary Harbour and eventually finishes in Westport 66kms later! We have been spurned on by local legend that there is a public house at the summit of CP called Paddy's serving only snakebite and this will be our grail, our Raison D'Etre. Here's the breakdown of the distances:
Running/Walking: 20km Approx
Cycling: 44km Approx
Kayaking: 1.6km Max
The detailed breakdown, nature and sequence of activity is as follows:
Stage 1: Beach, Trail and Road Run 12km
Stage 2: Kayaking across Killary Harbour 1.6km
Stage 3: Trail and Road Run 3.5km
Stage 4: Cycling 32.5km
Stage 5: Mountain Run/Hike 4.5km
Stage 6: Cycling 12.5km

Why are we doing this? We're not entirely sure....kinda got caught up in the moment, possibly to prove to some doubters that we can infact survive a weekend in the wilds - but of course we realised that through our suffering we may be able to raise a bit of much needed cash for charity as well as give some laughs to the doubters. That's why we have selected Acquired Brain Injury Ireland (formerly the Peter Bradley Foundation) as a very worthy cause and we would very much appreciate your support in helping us to raise funds for this charity.
Please read a few words about it below if you're not already familliar. You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from us thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small (or HUGE) is hugely appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for your support (and don't forget some prayers),
Team "You sure there's a pub up here?"
(a.k.a. Rónán & Richie)
PS - another way to support us would be to take the weekend off and come on over to laugh at two fatties get wet and exasperated. We're heading over to Westport on the Friday (trying to stay off the beer!), but we'll be out on the Saturday night for the after party - if we can stay awake. Could be a good weekend for all. Let us know if you want to book accommodation? |
