My Personal Message

Hey Guys,
The time is getting near, we have had thee full days of meetings run by Habitat for Humanity Ireland. They are very professional and have prepared us well for our trip. The first two meetings were for the leaders, the last meeting was for all the team members, our bunch of energetic, chatty teens. We now know where we are going - Chipulukusu, which is near Ndola, 4-5 hours from Lusaka the capital of Zambia. Chipulukusu means "worthless" in their local language, hopefully our time spent in the town, working with the locals and being immersed in the community will improve their belief in themselves and their town. We are going into learn from them, work with them, celebrate with them, show them that we appreciate and value them. we know we are not going to change alot for them but if we can do a little.

Our teens are full of excitement, energy and questions!!! But because we have had a lot of meetings, social nights together and raised money together we are a tight knit well educated group. we are now planning a fashion show together to see before we go out how we all work together, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and its a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun too. The work boots, the gloves, yellow work jackets are ordered. The injections are being got and trips to the doctor and dentist are being sorted. The malaria tablets, mosquito nets, sleeping bags, sun cream, baby wipes are all being sought too.

We are still a little way off out target, but wow we have done raised alot, we have lots of people to thank, all those people, companies, organisations who have helped us with sponsership, with prizes, with their time, without them we would be no where near the amount of money we have.
lindsay made a great speech to Bandon Rotary Club and they were very generous to us too. Kinneigh Select vestry ran a coffee afternoon for us in January and considering the stormy weather we did very well.
The table quiz made 1000euros, was a lot of work but was very enjoyable. we are now 2/3 of the way in our fund raising and there are alot of generous people out there especially at this time of year and these unsure economic times. Lindsay made a speech recently at BAndon Rotary Club and she went down a storm. the teenagers will soon behaving a charity sleepover at the school (I pity the teachers on duty!!! - the noise and chatter, music etc). they are getting great support from the school and theri Principal David Sutton.
Lindsay and I are part of a Bandon Grammar Group going out to Zambia in April 2011, in total there are 10 teenagers from transition year and five adults (parents). we will be going to a remote village in the north west of the country to build houses. The families we are building the houses for, will be working along side us. To raise the money required is a daunting task but we are determined to raise the money with as many funding raising events as possible, and asking and begging for donations, from sponser walks and runs, to guess the weight, to table quizes, no uniform day at Bandon Grammar etc. We know our work will be hard when we get out there but we also know that it will be life changing for the families who will get the houses, their lives will be changed forever. Lindsay raised €350 recently at the "Bring and Buy sale" on the farm.
