My Personal Message

Hey Guys,

Thanks for visiting our personal fundraising page. The 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) charity is a very worthy cause and we would very much appreciate your support in helping us to raise funds for this charity.

On Saturday 4th of June 2011, 10 members of the Dublin Airport Police/ Fire Service will attempt to row across the Irish Sea in aid the D.A.A. charity of the year the 3t’s (Turn The Tide of Suicide). The crossing from Howth to Holyhead is a distance of 100 kilometres and will take approximately 12 hours. The Airport Police/Fire Service have set up their own club (The A.P.F.S. Rowing Club) and have bought a 25ft Celtic longboat which is a fibreglass coxed four coastal rowing boat. The training for this challenge started in November 2010 and the team row every week out of Malahide Marina where the marina management have very kindly offered a mooring for the boat for the duration of the training. The crew itself is gaining in experience all the time and are determined that nothing will stop them from completing their goals having last year climbed the 18 highest mountains in Ireland in under 62 hours (55,400ft) something never attempted before, they are a very fit, strong and determined group. There will be several collection days in Grafton St. and Dublin Airport in May and the rowing club hope to raise over €15,000 for the 3t’s.
The Irish Coast Guard based at Dublin Airport have very kindly offered to provide aerial photography of the event. TV3 have invited the rowing team onto Ireland AM in May to talk about the challenge before we go and again afterwards in June to discuss how everything went which will also be a great opportunity to thank our sponsors who are the D.A.A., Malahide Marina, MGM Boats and Stena Line. The Rowing Club intend to embark on a charity challenge every year for the D.A.A. staff charity of the year and are already planning to enter a team into The Celtic Challenge in 2012 which is the longest rowing race in the world. This years challenge will start from Howth Harbour at 0600hrs on Saturday 4th June and finish at Holyhead Harbour before 1800hrs. For more information visit our website www.firefighterschallenge.ie

Many thanks in advance for your support

About my charity

3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide)

3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) is a registered charity (CHY15710) founded to raise awareness of the problem of suicide in Ireland and to raise funds to help lower suicide rates through dedicated research, educational support and intervention.  The 3Ts receives no government funding but relies solely on fundraising and donations.

The No. 1 killer of young men in Ireland is not cancer, nor is it road traffic deaths, it is Suicide. Over 600 people in Ireland are estimated to die through suicide annually, one in six suicide deaths are males under 25 years, one in four are males under 35 years. There are a  staggering 11,000 presentations of deliberate self-harm annually to A & E Departments, a figure believed to represent only a fraction of cases.

Government funding is insufficient to adequately implement existing mental health and suicide prevention strategies and as a result there is no dedicated statutory service for people in suicidal crisis.  To meet this need, in 2009 the 3Ts joined with fellow charity, Console, to set up the 1LIFE Suicide Helpline Tel 1 800 24 7 100, Ireland's first dedicated 24 hour Suicide prevention and intervention helpline providing crisis intervention counselling and other services for anyone with any issue related to suicide or deliberate self-harm.

It is part of the 3Ts ethos to distribute funds raised across a variety of projects and organisations working in the fields of deliberate self-harm and suicide prevention, intervention and post-vention, so in addition to funding the 1Life Helpline, donations to 3Ts contribute to a variety of 3Ts supported projects which can range from research programmes, to supporting small organisations working at grass roots level to helping fund training or support workshops.

The more awareness we have as a community about the issues of suicide and deliberate self-harm, the more opportunities we create to lobby for change. 3Ts has been involved in a variety of successful awareness projects which we believe have contributed to bringing the problem of suicide to the public consciousness.
