My Personal Message

Hey Guys,

My name is Simon Baker and I am a below the knee amputee. In 2008 I completed the Dublin City marathon on one leg with the aid of a pair of crutches, earning myself a place in the Guinness book of world records for fastest marathon on one leg. This year I am embarking on a new challenge called 'One Step at a Time' in aid of the ISPCC. I will walk from Dublin to Limerick from the 22nd to 27th August on crutches and without the aid of my prostethic leg covering over 240 KM.

I am in constant training for this massive challenge and know that there will be a lot of mental and physical battles along the route but your support for the ISPCC will help me to cross the finish line and to ignore the blisters. My support team for this challenge includes professional fitness instructor, Jason Kenny (Forever Fit Promotions), Sports Masseur Orla Smith, 2 ISPCC team members, Jackie Maurer & Gillian Moloney, 1 safety consultant Ned O Dwyer who is also the driver of our support vehicle and the actor Francis 'Concy' Ryan.

You can follow my progress through the media and on facebook and twitter. You can support us along the route as we pass through or on this page. The ISPCC relies on the kindness of others to provide their services and all your support is greatly appreciated and will help to improve the lives of children and teenagers in Ireland.

So jump on board and follow my progress from the 22nd to the 27th August and see you all in the Locke Bar in Limerick for the BBQ and after party on the 27th when I will be taking a well deserved rest.

Please read a few words about the charity that I have chosen to support below. You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from me thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your support,

Simon

About my charity

ISPCC/Childline

For over 100 year the ISPCC has been Ireland’s leading independent children’s charity advocating for the rights, well being and protection of children.

The ISPCC exists to:

  • Ensure all children are given the chance to feel love and happiness
  • Stop discrimination and exclusion of children
  • End cruelty and injustice to children

Our vision To see an Ireland where all children are heard and valued.

Mission statement To advocate on behalf of all children in Ireland, and to provide a range of independent and unique services which are preventative and empowering in nature.

The ISPCC runs 4 key services from a network of regional offices: Childline, ChildFocus, TeenFocus and Leanbh. We work with thousands of children and young people each year all over Ireland.

The ISPCC offices are located in Dublin, Cork, Castlebar, Drogheda, Galway, Limerick, Mullingar, Monaghan, Waterford and Wicklow.

We receive less than 10% government funding which means your support is vital to our work.
