My Personal Message
Jigsaw Galway welcome home Ray Carroll following a huge feat...
on the 5th of August
in the Townhouse Bar, Spanish Arch, Galway City
at 7:30pm
(finger food will be provided)
Ray Carroll (a native Galwegian) and three others are currently rowing across the Atlantic ocean in an attempt to break what is said to be the oldest world record ever recorded.
Following two previous attempts in the preceding days, on the 17th of June 2010, the team embarked on a challenge to row from New York, USA to Falmouth, UK in under 55 days in the 23' boat 'Artemis Investments'. That's a distance (as the crow flies) of 3,246 miles or 5,223 km.
The Artemis North Atlantic Challenge is to beat this record completely unsupported. This means from cast off in New York, the team can receive no help from any other vessel or person whatsoever, until they make land in the UK.
The North Atlantic Ocean is the 'Everest' of ocean rowing and demands the utmost strength of body and character as well as tenacity. This is an exciting but very daunting crossing - as huge seas, poor weather conditions and icebergs may be encountered.
Artemis Investments is a 23’ ocean rowing boat, small by all accounts; and the sleeping/resting quarters are very confined. Each team member works 'two-hours-on / two-hours-off' shifts, 24/7.

About my charity
Jigsaw Galway
Jigsaw Galway is a free and confidential support service for 15-25 year olds living in Galway city and county. We provide: - information,
- non-judgemental listening,
- emotional support,
- guided self-help and
- supported referral to other services
for young people who are going through difficult times. Young people can text, email, call or drop-in to our centre in the city. If they can't come to the drop-in centre, we can meet them in a place where they feel comfortable and safe. We have a variety of professionals available such as Support Workers, Nurse, Doctors and After-care Workers. If a young person needs further / different supports, we will work to ensure that they are linked in with the most appropriate services. The aim is to ensure that young people get the support they need, when and where they need it. Jigsaw Galway is a partnership between Headstrong (www.headstrong.ie), the Health Service Executive (www.hse.ie) and Mental Health Ireland (www.mentalhealthireland.ie). Jigsaw has a Youth Panel, with members from a variety of backgrounds, which plays a hugely influential role in creating and maintaining a service that is open, youth-friendly and youth-focused.
