“PROJECT AFRICA” - BUILDING A BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER
In December 2006, AIG Investments in Dublin launched an initiative called “PROJECT AFRICA”. Using AIG Investments’ energy and cross border team collaboration, Project Africa’s current objective is to raise funds to provide essential development infrastructure that will radically change the lives of the Kisiki community in the Malindi District of South East Kenya.
Project Africa’s first initiative is to raise €100,000 to construct a footbridge over the River Galana in Malindi. Locals need to cross the river to get clean water and to seek food for their children. The River Galana is 100 to 150 meters across in places and infested with crocodiles. The locals run the risk of crocodile attack every time they wade across.
They have no alternatives at the moment - until they have that “PROJECT AFRICA” footbridge!
AIG Investments Project Africa Team has partnered with “Gorta” - one of the leading Irish charities working in third world countries. Gorta, in conjunction with their local partners, will be responsible for the local planning, logistics and construction of the bridge.
The Project Africa Team in Dublin will manage and oversee the fund raising efforts and allocation of these funds.
AIG Investments has made a fantastic start to the fund raising effort! Our AIG Investments colleagues based in East Africa have committed to raising € 13,000 and will also visit the site of the bridge in Malindi.

About my charity
Gorta
Gorta’s mission is to work for a world free from the injustices of chronic hunger, poverty and disease, having special regard for the plight of children and the empowerment of women. Gorta establishes partnerships with local communities, and supports local leadership to ensure that their needs are met in a holistic and sustainable way.
Programmes and Projects supported by Gorta are located predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa where the need is greatest. Their objective is to help people become self-sufficient in food production and income generation thereby creating a secure future for generations to come. Gorta supports agricultural activities including livestock rearing, irrigation schemes and other water-based projects. The support of education and healthcare initiatives and of income generating activities also forms an important part of Gorta’s work.
