My Personal Message Hey Guys,With your help I will be taking part in 'Trek Transylvania' - a gruelling five day hike across Romania, in order to raise funds for the vital work of Suicide or Survive who help those suffering from severe depression, and/or contemplating suicide. At the height of summer, I will be walking for over seven hours each day for five days. I will be trekking across the Romanian countryside and across the 'Transylvanian Alps' and along the 22km long King's Rock mountain. Over the next few weeks- and indeed over the last few months - I will be taking part in mammoth sessions in the gym, long cycles and practice walks up some of Ireland's highest hills and mountains in preparation for the trek. I have chosen to raise money for Suicide or Survive, as I feel this issue is widely ignored, and needs to be addressed properly. Five hundred and twenty seven people died last year from suicide, up over 100 on last year, according to the Central Statistics Office. Suicide is indeed a silent and devastating national tragedy. The charity I am asking you to support aims to challenge the stigma attached to mental illness, and suicidal feelings. This is an issue which blights people's lives, and the saddest thing is it can be avoided with help and early intervention. This is what SoS provides, running various programmes designed to help people contemplating suicide move away from this state of mind. About my charity Suicide or Survive (SOS) is a registered Irish Charity that works to reduce the incidence of suicide in Ireland. SOS challenges the stigma attached to mental illness and provides a range of educational and therapeutic programmes that increase the understanding of suicide, and plays an active role in its prevention in Ireland. The charity believes in a society where every person understands their own mental health, where stigma has been replaced by a deep respect for the mental health of others, and where a person who is depressed or suicidal can get the in-depth support they need to cope and make the choice to live.
