My Personal Message
Hi,
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page. The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland is a very worthy cause and we would very much appreciate your support in helping us to raise funds for this charity.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Story:
The plan to walk the length of the country was hatched on a rainy evening in Deer Park tennis club, when two young pups, Gavin Kane and Barry Flinn, were discussing laziness and life over a hot drop and a cheeky Milky Way bar. It had all the makings of a plan that would be talked about and go nowhere, but surprisingly, the lads stuck to their guns. Indeed, a team of 8 more friends came on board and the team doing the walk is now 10 strong.
We chose Cystic Fibrosis Ireland as our cause for a number of reasons. The nature of the illness and its effects are reasons alone, but its prevalence in Ireland, and seeing it as an especially Irish problem, made it fitting to be tied to a walk across Ireland. In our fundraising efforts so far we have met a number of people who suffer from CF, or are closely connected to patients, and the prevalence of the disease in Ireland has been well demonstrated. The numbers don't lie. Indeed, one of the team, Sam Hodgins, sadly lost his cousin to CF a few years ago.
Looking at it as an Irish problem has mobilised a desire to bring Irish people together to fight it. To that end, and to raise more interest and awareness, we are going to do the walk with our noses painted green. Countless ideas have been discussed to add an eye-catching touch to the mission, and until recently we had decided on painting ourselves in the various county colours of our given destination for the day. However, with some members more keen than others, and in the interest of unity (and feasibility - carrying tubes of paint, frantically trying to change colours at the Galway-Mayo border, you know yourself) we decided on a more subtle theme. The green nose is a small symbol of health, nature and Irish unity. We think it encapsulates the aim of the walk in a more subtle way. Of course by we, I mean everyone except Sam, who will be lathered in paint as often as he can. And with his grizzly beard, thundering muscles and sleeveless shirts, catching the eye shouldn't be a problem.

The Team:
Aoife Devane: The newest member of the crew. An all-round catch. The boys in Meenacrumlin won't know what hit 'em.
Gavin FitzGerald: 'We'll be grand lads, it's only walking.'
Barry Flinn: Enthusiast of the finger-toothbrush. Hygiene issues likely to dominate.
Mark Grennan: Unbelievable at really hard sums. Best serve-and-volleyer of the group.
Sam Hodgins: Unlikely to pack long pants. Likely to find a really big stick along the way.
Tim Hurley: Expected to eat no more than 8 times on the trip. Mostly M&M's.
Gavin Kane: The hottest guy in BESS and co-ordinator of training and safety.
David McKeating: Prone to apparating against his will, splinching could prove troublesome.
Conor McKinney: Two weeks of uninterrupted beard growth will have the girls in Meenacrumlin as feverish as the boys.
Laura Motherway: The original mother figure of the group. Has better handwriting than Tim. The Motorway.

What Else Is Going On?
We have already done collections in UCD and Trinity, and will be doing another in Galway City Centre on the 17th of June.
We have now held Table Quizzes in Russell's pub in Ranelagh on the 1st of June and in Donnybrook Tennis Club on the 4th. Combined, the two events raised over 2300 euro. We would like to thank everyone who came down and supported the events for their incredible kindness and generosity.
Keep track of the Mission by reading our blog, which will be updated daily so that you know where we are and how we're doing:
