My Personal Message
Hello to all-
First, thank you for your interest in sponsoring me on the biggest challenge of my life thusfar! I chose Headway as my charity for a personal reason...
In 1989, I was attending my older brother and sister's swimming meet in The Woodlands, Texas. To pass the time, I sat down on the edge of the grandstands, which were ill-equipped for keeping me safe behind the railing. Apparently, I either fell on my own or was gently nudged by a passerby. I lost my balance and fell from the grandstands, directly onto my skull. Knocked unconscious, emergency services were called immediately and I was taken to the local hospital to be Life-Flighted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. I had fractured my skull, and the chances of me waking from my coma were dismal. The doctors were not hopeful of my recovery as I was clinically brain-dead, and my parents were faced with the possibility of losing me...
Miraculously, I eventually awakened from my coma, and slowly progressed to a full recovery. Other than minimal damage to my occipital lobe in my brain and compaction of my C1 and C2 vertebrae, I enjoy a fully-functioning life, including attempting to swim the English Channel!
I realise how fortunate I was to regain function of my brain, but there are many out there whose outcomes are not as auspicious as mine. For that reason, I chose Headway because I believe in the importance of offering service to families and those afflicted by brain injury.
I would very much appreciate your support in helping me to raise funds for Headway, and please read about the charity below.

About my charity
Headway
Headway, the National Association for Acquired Brain Injury.
How a brain injury affects people A brain injury can happen suddenly to anyone after an accident, a stroke, or an infection, for example. It can make it difficult for them to return to work or study, to enjoy a social life, to communicate fully with other people, or even to live independently. How Headway makes a difference “The Headway staff were always there – building up my confidence and helping me set new goals.” Sinead, a Dublin Rehabilitative Day Services client. “After my accident, I started going to Headway. I learned how to cook and use computers, and relearned how to read and write. Headway gave me a reason to get up every morning.” John, a Rehabilitative Services Trainee in Cork. “Your reply to my e-mail didn’t just give me information. I found it very reassuring that I am able to keep in contact for further help.” Michael, from Limerick. www.headway.ie | Phone: 1890 200 278 *These people have all accessed Headway’s services but their names have been changed to protect their privacy.
