My Personal Message

Hello,
Thanks for visiting my personal fundraising page. The Habitat for Humanity Ireland charity is a very worthy cause and I would very much appreciate your support in helping me to raise funds for this charity.

Please read a few words about the charity that I have chosen to support below. You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from me thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your support,

James

All,
I am leading a Habitat for Humanity Team to Botswana, Southern Africa in September of this year. We will be building houses for the poorest of the poor (aids orphaned families / disabled / homeless families).Aids is rampant in Botswana so there are many “child headed” households who need homes.

As I grew up in Botswana I knew the country well (this is not still the case as I haven’t been back in 25 years). I have seen the poverty at first hand and am very glad to be finally returning something to the country that moulded me (it has taken me far too long to do this so I will be working my hardest to achieve as much as possible in the two weeks). The people in Botswana are a very gentle, kind people and they would be very gratefull to receive whatever help you may be able to give – especially the very poorest at whom the Habitat for Humanity efforts are aimed at.

Habitat do not just build the houses – they provide a solicitor to ensure that the land is registered with the Botswana govt so that the house cannot be taken from the family by others claiming the land (as can happen in Africa where lands are often not registered until someone decides they want a particular piece of land and registers it and thus can evict those living on it). Habitat organise the build and buy all the materials (the “family” where adults are present are expected to help with the build) and Habitat train both the family and other locals in how to build more houses and maintain their own – thus the community learns to help itself and are left with skills that help them to become self sufficient. Habitat will also sponsor the local Clinics, Schools etc to further benefit the community as a whole.

Botswana is one of Africa’s most politically stable countries and its diamond reserves have made a huge impact on the country’s income. However, half of the population still struggle to survive on less than $2 a day. One of the most vulnerable groups is women; one third of all families are now female-headed households and 60% of women live in extreme poverty

This years build will be for two weeks at the end of September 2010.

I have to raise €3,100 sponsorship and would be very grateful if you could help in any amount at all.(I understand that times are hard for many and will appreciate any and all donations and likewise understand if no donation is made at all).
(Note that any individual or company that donates €250 or more at once can offset this against Tax thus reducing the “cost” ; if you do this and feel doubly generous when Habitat / Mycharity send you out the relevant form you can then sign over the tax element to them if you wish).
