Thank you for visiting this page.
What am I doing?
I'm walking to the highest point in each county in Ireland during 2010. It's November now and I've been up 23 of the 26 mountains involved. (Some counties, for example Carlow and Wexford, share a high point in this case Mount Leinster, hence the figure of 26 peaks for 32 counties.)
I've been blogging about each of my walks over at http://countytops.wordpress.com so come and learn more about the hills involved....and see proof that I'm not sitting at home making this stuff up.
Why am I doing it?
During the course of 2008 my wife Liz and I were expecting our second baby, who was due to be born on the 9th of December. Sometime during the night of the 3rd and 4th of that month, just hours after a routine scan and check-up, she stopped moving and died. She was born on the 5th of December. We shall never know what caused our little Eve to die as all investigations showed that she should have been a perfectly healthy little girl.
Her death stopped our lives in their tracks and plunged us very suddenly into a dark and bewildering new world of grief.
And were soon to learn that we were not alone. In Ireland approximately 500 babies a year die in and around the time of birth. Their parents are people just like Liz and I.
The reason why I am raising money for Little Lifetime Foundation (until recently known as ISANDS) is because these are the people who first show parents like us a tiny flicker of light in the dark. They provide literature to hospitals that explain to newly shocked parents with simplicity and sympathy what needs to be done on a practical level when a baby dies. They run monthly meetings that are critically important to parents, bringing them together to talk and be understood and letting them know that they are not alone. If you ring the ISANDS number at three in the morning, the phone will be answered by someone who will listen to you.
All of this important work is done on a voluntary basis.
Here are some figues that will give you an idea of some of the costs involved with running the charity, and where your donations will be used.
:: Monthly meetings that are run around the country cost from €500 - €800 each
:: Training a volunteer who can run meetings etc. costs approximately €10,000
:: Publishing the charity's quarterly newsletter costs approximately €9,000
:: Printing and distributing the 'Little Lifetime' information pack to be given to parents in hospitals costs around €10 per unit.
These are just some of the costs incurred by ISANDS. As you can see, any contribution you can make will be much appreciated and put to practical use.
Many thanks in advance for your support,
