My Personal Message
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page. The Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim in aid of Cancer Care West, now coming into its fifth year, will take place on Saturday, 24th July. The swim from Auginish in Co. Clare to Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill is a distance of roughly 13 kilometres has seen over 50 swimmers make successful crossings while in the process raising over €160,000 for Cancer Care West. In that period the charity has launched several new services to the people of Galway and the rest of Connacht.
This year, like other years, the majority of the swimmers will be stepping in to Galway Bay at Auginish in Co. Clare in just their swimming togs, with a few in wet suits, hoping to land at the iconic Blackrock Diving Tower a few hours later. Getting physically and mentally prepared for this type of swim is a huge challenge. The water temperature is approximately 15 degrees Celsius at this time of year and the mental strength needed to overcome this is paramount. The weather conditions are unpredictable and totally out of the swimmers hands. They will simply do their best to not disturb passing seals while trying to avoid the jellyfish and passing vessels!
Cancer Care West is a very worthy cause and we very much appreciate your support in helping to raise funds for this charity. About my charity
Cancer Care West
Cancer Care West is a not for profit West of Ireland registered charity (CHY11260) dedicated to supporting those whose lives have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. Our aim is to enhance patient care and well being and to provide supports to cancer patients and their families during and after their treatment. We aim to provide a holistic service that complements medical treatment through the provision of residential accommodation and support services. Cancer Care West also provides cancer awareness and educational programmes and undertakes research on patient care. Cancer Care West’s Residential facility is located at Inis Aoibhinn, on the grounds of University Hospital Galway. Our Cancer Support Centre is based at Seamus Quirke Road, a short walk from the hospital and Galway City. Cancer Care West provides support to cancer patients and their families from all over the West of Ireland including counties Clare, Donegal, Galway, Letirim, Limerick, Mayo, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Sligo. All of Cancer Care West's services are provided at no cost to patients and their families and we rely heavily on charitable fundraising and donations to meet the cost of these services.
