My Personal Message

Hey Guys,

Thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page.

In May 2012 a group of Hilton Foods employees and friends (The Hearty Fools) will embark on a 688km cycling challenge to raise urgent funds for the Cardiology Department in the Mater Hospital and we need your help.

The challenge will see the team cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head over 4 days in order to raise money for the Mater Foundation - The official charity of the Mater Hospital. Money raised through this great endeavor will go towards the Mater Foundation’s campaign to raise funds for the new 24 hour Cath Lab (Catheterization Laboratory).

The Cath lab is a national referral centre for patients being assessed for Heart Transplantation or the Adult Congenital Heart Service. It also provides a 24/7 emergency service 365 days a year for patients who are suffering from a heart attack. The cardiac catheterization laboratories in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital remains among the busiest in the country and continues to deliver on providing state of the art therapies to a high volume of complex cardiac patients.

This is a short personal story behind this funding event.

2 years ago on the 2nd Nov’09 I suffered a severe heart attack 2 days after my 40th birthday (the shock of the big 40!). As a result of this heart attack, which occurred on a Monday evening, I was transferred from Navan hospital, where I had been stabilized, to the Mater hospital in Dublin. 3 days later I underwent a triple bypass operation. For the team in the Mater, who do such an excellent job, my surgery although just one of 100 plus procedures / operations etc. they carry out in a week, for my family and I it was a life changing experience. As a result of the excellent care and support I received in the Mater hospital and the subsequent follow up care in the Cardiac Rehab Unit, I was back to work and exercising early in the New Year. In an attempt to give a little something back and potentially help others who find themselves in my position, the idea of this charity cycle was born. A number of guys, friends & colleagues, from all walks of life have signed up for the challenge, most of whom might I add will be undertaking the sport for the first time.

The Mater Foundation charity is a very worthy cause and while I acknowledge how challenging these times are, I would very much appreciate any donation you could make to support this challenge and in doing so raise much needed funds for this incredible charity.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the cyclists who have committed their time to not only join me on the challenge but also for the time and hard effort which will be required over the coming months in training, each one of them will put in up to 5 months of training before the big event. Perhaps more importantly I would like to thank all of their partners and wives (including my own wife Katie) who will be supporting & covering for us while we are clocking up the km’s in preparation for the event. We also have a very committed support crew on board and without these guy’s supporting us (the cyclists) we would not be able to complete the challenge.

If there is one thing about my experience that I would like to get across, that is that the unexpected can happen. However, the knowledge of some facts combined with regular check-ups may prevent the worst case scenario occurring, have you had a health check recently? A couple of the more interesting or frightening facts include:

• Five men die from heart attacks every week in Ireland
• Heart disease is the biggest killer of Irish men
• Nine times more men die from heart disease than prostate cancer
• A total of 274 premature male deaths occur every year through heart attack
• 50% of patients don’t call 999 at the first sign of a heart attack

I’d like to thank you for taking the time to log on and read this page, I do hope you can find a way to support us in this challenge, as they say every little helps!!

You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from me thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your support,

Frank
