My Personal Message
Hey Guys,
Thanks for visiting my personal fundraising page. I am competing in the 2010 Marathon Des Sables (a 250 Ultra Marathon Race accross the Sahara in Morocco from April 4 to April 10 2010). The The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation charity is one of my choosen charities as it is a very worthy cause and I would very much appreciate your support in helping me to raise funds for this charity.
Please read a few words about the charity that I have chosen to support below and my upcomming adventure. You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card. You can be assured that your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from me thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation. Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for your support,
Cyril
Here is some information on the Marathon Des Sables and what I am letting my self into!!!!
On Easter Sunday, just when you were munching through your first Easter egg, spare a thought for me and 1,080 fellow competitors (from 40 different nations), as we started Stage 1 of the Marathon Des Sables Ultra Marathon ( 250KMs race over 7 days, split into 6 Stages, ranging from 35KMs to 90KMs/double marathon). Set in the Sahara Desert, Morocco, in temperatures that can vary from 0 °C to 50 °C; we had to run, walk, crawl, (in that order) over sand, rocks, and whatever else the desert threw up, carrying up to 15Kgs in our backpacks. All the race organisers provided us with was:
1. around 10 litres of water a day (depending on how the organisers feel on the day);
2. a basic open ended tent to sleep under at night (accommodates 8 people);
3. up to 2 saline drips in the event that you collapse and need to be revived (anymore than two drips and your out of the race); and
4. a helicopter ride out of the desert if you are too ill to go by road.
I managed to complete the race in just over 55 hours some 5 hours less than the minimum time I thought I would complete the race in. I also managed to complete the race with no obvious ill effects such as blisters and weight loss (would not have minded the weight loss!!!). Two weeks later I competed in and completed the Virgin London Marathon in 5 1/2 hours. Wearing all my MDS gear and carrying over 13kGs of weight I went for a World Record but missed it by a country mile !!!! Two very different experience but both amazing in so many different ways.

About my charity
Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation
The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding, to families of children with brain damage who suffer severe intellectual and physical developmental delay, enabling them to purchase home respite care. These are children who as a result of their condition require intensive home nursing care. The Foundation gives these families the Gift of time, time to do the things that we so often take for granted like shopping, taking their other children to the park, a night’s sleep etc.
Jack and Jill needs to raise over €3 million per year to provide these services. Less than 18% of our budget comes from the Government so we rely on innovative fundraising campaigns to reach our target. Please help us, to help our families by making a donation or by holding a fundraising event on our behalf.
