My Personal Message

Hey guys!

A group of us have decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise money for Fighting Blindness. This is a very worthy cause and one close to all our hearts as this charity has offered much support to some of the members of our group. One fellow climber, and very close friend, Tom, is registered legally blind after being diagnosed with Usher’s syndrome – a combined sensory loss of hearing impairment and Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the name given to a group of hereditary degenerative eye disorders, can lead to night blindness, severe tunnel visions, and even complete vision loss. One of the world’s leading research projects into blindness is currently taking place at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1989 researchers at Trinity College, Dublin, funded by Irish charity, Fighting Blindness, were the first in the world to isolate the gene responsible for RP. In 2008, this charity also provided part of the funding for a project which produced the world’s first successful gene therapy treatment and partially restored a young man’s sight - this project is now entering the next phase of clinical trials. While still in early phases, the results of this research have been phenomenal, and provide hopes that, with further funding, a cure is possible.

As well as research, this charity provides significant emotional support to those with sight impairments, and there families.

All costs of this challenge have been met by the participating individuals so that every penny raised goes directly to this worthy charity. I would be very grateful for any donations possible to help me reach my £2000 target! You can contribute via the 'sponor me now' link on this page!

Many many many thanks,

Amie
