My Personal Message

Have you ever imagined going blind? How frightened would you be? Imagine if it wasn’t you but it was your little son or daughter. No doubt you would wish to trade places with them in a flash. Imagine your son or daughter had trachoma, a terribly painful eye disease causing chronic inflammation of the eyelids that eventually scraps at the cornea until you turn blind. Imagine in your country you were so poor, you had no way to cure this painful debilitating disease, could no longer support your child and had no choice but to take little Jack or Sophie to the local orphanage and leave them there. And you know, with unimaginable grief, that in all probability, they would die in that orphanage within a year.

Thankfully we live in a country that thanks to medical advances, trachoma is a simple curable disease and we do not face this choice. Unfortunately though in too many countries children who are blind or visually impaired struggle in school, are unable to join the workforce or contribute to their family income and, more than often, are seen as a burden on families and society. In fact, up to half of children in developing countries, who become blind, do die within a year.

The good news is that ORBIS has been working to change this and since 1982 they have treated more than 10 million people for blindness related diseases in 87 developing countries worldwide. This has been achieved through the teaching of sight-saving skills to thousands of eye care professionals aboard the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital and in local hospitals. These professionals, in turn, have passed on their expertise to tens of thousands more.

Airbus Financial Services has been a proud sponsor of Orbis since the charity began fundraising in Ireland several years ago and this year a number of employees have volunteered to take part in one of Orbis Ireland’s biggest annual fundraising events, the Great Ethiopian Run, Africa’s biggest road race through the streets of Addis Ababa in November. The four day trip culminates in a 10km run at 10,000ft above sea level. The aim is to raise €3,000 each for Orbis Ireland and there are currently eight of us running.

Any donation big or small is hugely appreciated. You can donate using the "sponsor me now" button below via credit or debit card and we have been assured your transaction on the mycharity.ie website is very secure. You will automatically receive an e-mail from us thanking you for your support, and acknowledging the amount of your donation.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

About my charity

ORBIS Ireland

ORBIS delivers a special gift to thousands of people thrioughout the developing world, their sight.

In too many countries children who are blind or visually impaired struggle in school, are unable to reach their full potential and are seen as a burden on famillies and society.

ORBIS is an international charity dedicated to the treatment and prevention of blindness in the developing world and since it was founded in 1982 ORBIS has worked tirelessly to achieve its goal. With a focus on teaching and training ORBIS has carried out more than 1000 sight-saving programmes and treated more than 15 million people worldwide.

ORBIS Ireland is currently focused on one major project; to eliminate a highly prevalent and life destroying, blinding eye disease - trachoma - in some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia. Trachoma is a highly infectious eye disease that has been wiped out in the western world, but in countries like Ethiopia it continues to bring misery, pain, blindness and poverty.

Yet this disease is both easy to treat and prevent. With effective treatment someone's suffering could be over in a matter of days. Their sight could be saved and their life transformed. ORBIS Ireland has adopted the World Health Organisation's SAFE strategy which involves conducting corrective Surgery, to reverse the effetcs of trachoma; distributing Antibiotics to treat the inititial blinding infections; raising awareness of Facial cleanliness to prevent the bacteria which causes the infection; and improving the surrounding Environment through improving access to clean water and sanitation.
