My Personal Message
The swim finally happened. Cancelled due to bad weather on 31/07/10 it was rescheduled to 11/08/10. Fergal Somerville swam from Inis Meáin to Rosaveel in 6 hours and 30 minutes. The swim started at 11.30am in choppy conditions which resulted from strong northwesterly winds. The swim was done on a spring tide which produced a strong swell and rough conditions throughout.
Accompanied by Tarlach deBlacam, Michil Faherty and Michael Gartland the swim finished at Baile na hAbhann Pier and was met by a local group and TG4 news report team. All four travelled at speed via RIB back to a tumultous reception on Inis Meáin with the company of the Inismór Lifeboat and Crew.
The photo shows the welcome back to Inis Meáin from Inismór Lifeboat crew.

The Aran Lifeboat.
The Aran Lifeboat, based at Kilronan harbour, on Aran’s largest island of Inismór has saved many lives over the past 175 years. The crews have been presented with many awards for gallantry over the years. It is just one of the RNLI’s 235 lifeboat stations, covering the coasts of Ireland, Britain and selected inland waterways.
The Aran Lifeboat crew are volunteers and will drop everything to save lives in all conditions, day or night, throughout the year. Volunteers on the Aran Lifeboat are, like so many of their RNLI colleagues across Ireland and Britain, united by selflessness, skill and courage.
The Aran Islands offer Ireland’s most beautiful and rugged landscape. Three islands situated in the Atlantic waters of Galway Bay present the perfect sanctuary from the modern world. Setting foot on the Arans is like setting foot in Heaven. Irish is still in daily usage here.
The Islands are steeped in folklore and host some of Ireland’s most unique flora and fauna. Visitors, warmly welcomed by the islanders, are inspired by the serenity of the islands, the rugged beauty of the landscape, pre-Christian structures, stone churches, fortified ring forts and the cleanest sea water and beaches to be found any where.
The islands are accessible by ferry from Galway, Doolin and Rosaveel and by air from Inverrin
The Challenge
Three accomplished long-distance swimmers will take on the 2010 Aran Lifeboat Swimming Challenge to swim 12 miles (20 km) from Rosaveel to Inis Meáin. The proposed date for this is Saturday 31 July. A boat will accompany the three swimmers from Rosaveel. The boat will have the capacity to stay with the swimmers for the purposes of safety and, if required, rescue. The boat will be crewed by Michael Faherty and Aodán Concannon (Inis Meáin). One / two support personnel will accompany the boat to monitor swimmers and decide on issues of safety.
The swimmers are John Daly, John Kenny and myself.

About my charity
RNLI
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity that saves lives at sea. It provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service to 100 nautical miles out from the coast of the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The RNLI, which provides nine out of ten sea rescue launches, continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.
The RNLI in Ireland has 43 lifeboat stations operating 55 lifeboats in order to provide a ring of safety around the Irish coastline. This fleet enables the lifeboat service to reach at least 90% of all casualties that are within 10 nautical miles of lifeboat stations within 30 minutes of launch, in all weathers. Last year Irish Lifeboats launched 976 times and rescued over 1,000 people.
