History
Barnardos' founder, Thomas Barnardo (1845-1905), was born in Dame Street in Dublin in 1845, and was educated at St Patrick’s Cathedral School. Since 1962 Barnardos has been working in the Republic of Ireland, and in 1989 became an independent Irish organisation with our own Board and is now Ireland’s leading children’s charity.
Since 1989, Barnardos in Ireland has been steadily growing into Ireland's largest children's charity with an increasing range of services, based in local communities. Barnardos now works with children and families in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Carlow, Galway, Offaly, Tipperary, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Meath and Wexford, in addition to our national services.
In 2005 Barnardos launched its ambitious 12 year strategic plan for the organisation which has as the ultimate goal to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child. Valuing Childhood - Cherishing Children.
