History

Since its inception in 1977, GOAL has sent over 2,000 volunteers (GOALies) to work in the developing world. Currently 100 GOALies work alongside more than 2,500 local staff. GOAL has spent close to €650 million in the fight against poverty over the past 32 years.

GOAL pursues a policy of total transparency and accountability, publishing annual audited accounts. GOAL has its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland and has offices in the UK and USA. GOAL is proud of the fact that we have managed to achieve all of this whilst keeping our administrative costs exceptionally low.

GOAL has responded to nearly every major natural and man-made disaster for over three decades, working with the poorest of the poor in 50 countries.

Some of the emergency projects GOAL has undertaken includes rebuilding communities after natural disasters in earthquake-ravaged Kashmir, Pakistan… …responding to the Asian tsunami in India, Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands,.…implementing emergency food and shelter programmes in Sudan’s Darfur region… responding to famines and floods in Mozambique, India, Bangladesh, Sudan, Nepal.… and to hurricanes in El Salvador and Honduras… to cholera epidemics in the DRC…

…assisting and repatriating millions of refugees in the DRC, Sudan, northern Uganda, Sierra Leone, Bosnia–Herzegovina….sinking wells…refurbishing and building schools and houses…moving hundreds of tonnes of food in famine prone Ethiopia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Niger....

…implementing rehabilitation and long-term development programmes…..women’s literacy programmes in Ethiopia and Sudan…assisting AIDS orphans in Malawi and Uganda…. investing in water & sanitation and infrastructure to assist poor and isolated rural communities in India, Philippines, Kenya….aiding slum dwellers in India, Honduras, Philippines, and Kenya….educating, feeding and clothing thousands of street children in Angola, Ethiopia, India, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya and Honduras…

Once emergency situations have been resolved, GOAL implements a wide range of rehabilitation programmes including primary healthcare, repair of home and infrastructure, clinics, schools etc., and water and sanitation. Long-term development programmes in areas such as health, nutrition, education and capacity building of indigenous humanitarian organisations are also implemented.
