Our 2012 fundraising projects In 2012, funds raised will be split evenly between two charities; Solas Project and Orbis Ireland. Details of what the charities have undertaken to deliver with their 50% share of the €100,000 we expect to raise through the event is outlined below. ORBIS Ireland ORBIS delivers a special gift to thousands of people across the developing world…the gift of sight. In too many countries children who are blind or visually impaired struggle in school, are unable to join the workforce, are therefore unable to reach their full potential and are seen as a burden on families and society. The fact is that up to half of children in developing countries who become blind will die within two years. ORBIS is an international organisation dedicated to the treatment and prevention of blindness in the developing world and since it was founded in 1982 it has worked tirelessly to achieve its goal. With a focus on teaching and training, ORBIS has carried out more than 1,000 sight-saving programs and treated more than 15 million people worldwide. 2012 marks ORBIS’ 30th year of sight saving work and, to mark this occasion, the Sporting Proud Triathlon is proud to support this worthy cause. The funds raised from the triathlon will go towards eliminating a highly prevalent and life destroying, blinding disease, trachoma – trachoma – from some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia. Your support will help us make the following direct impact in Ethiopia; · We'll conduct an additional 4,167 surgeries to reverse the effects of trachoma. · We'll train a further 40 nurses to conduct the simple eye surgery. · We'll distribute more than 33,000 doses of an antibiotic which will prevent someone from contracting trachoma. · We'll provide a communal latrine that will improve sanitation for up to 500 people. · We'll provide 6 clean water stations to a school giving up to 650 people access to safe water Please support ORBIS at the 2012 Sporting Proud Triathlon and together we can put a stop to this painful and preventable condition. This year, your support will help us to dramatically change the lives of an additional 15 disadvantaged young children. By providing them access to the Solas after school programme for a full calendar year, you will help them to overcome limitations imposed on them by their social and educational disadvantage. That’s 15 kids who you’ll have helped to steal back a future for. You’ll give them access to purposeful activity in a caring and secure home-like environment that will better meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. You’ll play a vital role in keeping them at school and away from potential involvement in youth crime. You’ll have helped them to discover their abilities, their self-worth and helped them to develop their self-esteem, self-confidence and life-skills. You’ll have helped them become the bright young inspirational people they have the potential to be. www.solasproject.ie Our combined target for fundraising in 2012 is €100,000
