The Kylemore Trust

Up to 2008, the legal status of Kylemore Abbey was that of a non-registered company with charity status. The closure of the school, planned for 2010, other changes in the community, and changes in Irish society were making it clear that it would be advisable for Kylemore Abbey to become registered as a company, in order to have the legal status necessary to navigate its way into the future.

The Kylemore Trust was registered in May 2009 with community members as Trustees. A board of directors was set up, including Benedictine monks from Glenstal and Roscrea, and initially 2 lay directors.

The aims of the Trust can be summarised as follows:
• to support the Benedictine community and promote the continuation of the monastic presence for the future
• to maintain Kylemore Abbey with its buildings and amenities, especially its spiritual potential, for the Benedictine order and the nation
• promoting educational projects.
