End Poverty. Together. ActionAid Ireland is a member of ActionAid International, one of the world’s most respected development organisations working with over 20 million people in more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Since ActionAid Ireland was founded in 1983, we have taken sides with poor people, focusing in particular on women and girls, to end poverty and injustice working mainly with communities in Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Cambodia, Nepal and Vietnam. Through our Child Sponsorship programmes and our strong Irish supporter base, we are improving the lives of thousands of children and communities by helping them to secure their basic rights to food, water, shelter, medical attention and education. We also campaign for the rights of those who have been marginalised and connect and empower people to speak up and have a voice at a national level, in order effect changes in legislation and improve their lives. Support our team of 'Action Hereos' in our 'Run the Miles, See the Smiles' campaign and help to build a school for 500 children in Giriki Village, eastern Uganda. Can you see the school? Can you see the potential? Can you see a future free from poverty? ActionAid has helped the people of Giriki in Uganda resettle after years of conflict and has built a healthcentre for the children in 2008. The people of Giriki have a 'grand design' for their future and with your help, we can make that dream a reality. With the nearest school 20 miles away, children like David Chekwoti, aged 10 (pictured) and his friends are missing their education. But the people of Giriki have picked out a patch of land and they can already picture 8 classrooms, 3 staff houses, desks and books and 500 children filling the school. David hopes that one day he can become a teacher - this project is not just about bricks and mortar - it is an opportunity for this community to make life different for their children. As well as building the school, we also plan to create sustainable school gardens, which produce high yielding crops to ensure that the children get at lease one nourishing meal a day.
